For those of us living with anxiety, one critical concern is finding a safe and long-term method for managing symptoms. Doctors are quick to prescribe quick-acting medications such as Xanax or Valium for help with anxiety. These medications may offer instant relief but can very quickly become addictive. Something like Prozac, which works over a longer period of time simply doesn’t work for everyone.
Enter CBD (cannabidiol.) CBD has recently entered the spotlight as an alternative or even a complementary treatment for anxiety, and for good reason. The testimonials alone are enough for anyone struggling with anxiety enough reason to give CBD a shot as a natural, non-addictive and effective way to manage your anxiety.
For anxiety, CBD works like this – when the body naturally releases endocannabinoid chemicals (or you ingest them through an oil, tincture or edible,) they connect with the receptors and that stimulates the body’s natural ability to create serotonin, a natural mood stabilizer.

A full spectrum CBD oil, the whole plant extract, is recommended for those who aren’t opposed to a little THC. It has been shown that all of the parts of the plant working together are far more effective. In natural medicine, this is referred to this as the ‘entourage effect’, which yields far better results than one part of a plant being isolated and asked to work on its own. With a full spectrum CBD oil, it is also easier to find the dose that works for you, meaning a higher likelihood of success using a full spectrum CBD oil than a CBD Isolate.
On the other hand, CBD isolate is simply CBD that has been isolated from the cannabis plant (meaning there is no THC). CBD isolate contains no other cannabinoids (THC being one of them,) so isolate is a good choice for those that are drug tested for work, or simply have an aversion to ingesting THC. CBD alone still has anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and anti-anxiety properties, but is also known for its tendency to be harder to pinpoint the dose that works for you.
Taking the oil every day is key, as CBD does not work like a pharmaceutical drug, where you will feel the effects right away – it takes time for the CBD to work it’s way into your system and for some people, this can take up to 6 weeks, but most people see results within 2 weeks. Others may notice the effects shortly after beginning their CBD routine. The takeaway from this is to be patient and make sure you’re getting your CBD from a reputable company that is happy to provide you with third party lab test results (such as all of the CBD that we carry).
Many factors can determine the length of time it will take to start seeing results from CBD. How it is administered, the potency and quality of the product and your body’s rate of metabolizing the oil will all factor into this. The best way to administer CBD oil is sublingually, or under the tongue. The rate of absorption is far greater there and taking CBD this way will ensure it enters your bloodstream quickly, bypassing your digestive system. To decide on potency, we usually recommend starting with a 500 mg version, as it’s really just a good starting point as you experiment and discover what dose works for you. Once you discover your dose, you can buy a stronger or weaker concentration accordingly. You will not feel it faster or slower depending on the potency of the oil you’re taking, all that has to do with your own body’s rate of metabolizing the CBD oil. When shopping for CBD, you want to be getting the highest quality oil you can, and the best way to do that is to ask the company for their third-party lab test results. Any reputable company will be more than happy to share these with you, and if they don’t, you know they’re not the right fit for you.
No, quite the opposite actually! CBD is a known anxiety fighter and those that are patient enough to find the dose of CBD that works for them notice a big drop in their anxious feelings. Those suffering from anxiety may want to stay away from too much THC, as THC has been known to increase those anxious feelings in those already suffering from anxiety. A full spectrum CBD oil is still very appropriate for treating anxiety, even though it does contain a small amount of THC, but you’ll want to stay away from the higher concentrations (the 2,500 mg version, for example.) And like always, you’ll want to start low and go slow with your dose.
Success with CBD is really all about finding the right dose for you personally, and this usually involves some experimentation. If you have been taking the same dose of CBD for one week and have felt no improvement in lowering your anxiety, it’s time to increase! Increase slowly and always wait at least a few days before increasing again so that you have some time to notice any changes or effects the oil is having on you. Some will say that all this experimenting can get expensive, but we think that it’s a small price to pay for switching out addictive prescription anxiety drugs for a completely natural, non-addictive alternative.
The negative side effects of taking CBD are few, but in rare cases people have reported diarrhea, fatigue and changes in appetite. CBD can also interfere with some medications, so it’s important to talk with your doctor before beginning any CBD regimen.
The short answer is yes, CBD has zero phycho-active properties and it is considered very safe to go about your daily life as normal while taking CBD. That being said, we recommend taking your first few doses when you’re in for the night just to be sure that you don’t have any negative side effects from the CBD oil. If you have decided to take the full spectrum CBD, keep in mind that there is a small amount of THC in this product,and some people may get slightly impaired, depending on how much they’re taking. It’s always a good idea to take your first week of doses in the evening, when you’re in for the night, just to see how you react to that THC.
Not usually, but there have been cases where people do feel fatigued from taking CBD at the beginning. If that is the case with you, simply start taking the CBD in the evening instead! If you are taking a full spectrum product, you may feel a little drowsy due to the low THC content. This is not true for everyone, so you will have to experiment to see if this is true for you.
Other than a couple of exceptions, most prescribed anti-anxiety medications are very fast acting, but they can also be very addictive, making those anxiety sufferers completely reliant on these drugs. With CBD, there is absolutely no addictive properties and although the results are apparent over a longer period of time, most of those people using CBD for anxiety are willing to trade an addictive prescription medication for something that is completely natural and non-addictive.
Although very rare, it is possible to have negative interactions between CBD and your current anti-anxiety medication. If CBD is taken in conjunction with, for example, Xanax or Ativan, it is possible that the side effects associated with these drugs could be worsened. That being said, we always recommend speaking with your doctor about these possibilities before starting any CBD routine, as there is simply not enough solid research done in this area to be able to give a guaranteed answer to this question.
For the purpose of helping with anxiety, it is recommended to use a CBD tincture. You place the oil under your tongue and hold it there for 30-60 seconds, as this is where absorption into the bloodstream is greatest, and the CBD bypasses the digestive system and liver this way.
There are many companies out there producing CBD, and their extraction methods will differ, although CO2 and solvent extraction methods are the most common. Always ask to see those lab results, as you want to make sure that for those CBD oils using a solvent extraction that the levels of remaining solvents are well below the acceptable limits.
