How does CBD affect dogs?
Looking to start your pup on a CBD regimen, but aren’t sure where to start and what product or dose would be best for your dog? No problem at all, we can help!
The research into using CBD for animals has just begun, and only a small portion of the possibly treatable ailments have been clinically tested, but as of right now, there are no known adverse side effects for dogs taking CBD. If your dog is currently on prescribed medications, it’s still smart to keep an eye on your pup to ensure that there are no negative interactions between the CBD oil and your pup’s current meds. Still, we do recommend speaking with your vet about starting your pet on any CBD routine.
While the clinical studies are few as of now, the anecdotal evidence is staggering. Pet owners who have tried CBD seem to swear by it, simply based on the results they’re seeing in their own dogs. Check out the reviews on all of our pet products for those success stories.
Before we go any further, a quick clarification on the difference between CBD and THC. Both CBD and THC are parts of the cannabis plant, known as ‘cannabinoids’. There are over 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, but CBD and THC are the two most common. CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it doesn’t have the ability to create a ‘high’ feeling. CBD is also safe for both humans and animals. THC is the part of the plant that causes that ‘high’ feeling, and can be toxic to dogs in certain amounts. Every precaution should be taken to ensure that your pup doesn’t snag that tasty THC cookie or candy off the table when you’re not looking. Emergency pet hospitalizations for THC ingestion are on the rise, so be careful with those THC goodies around your pet!
“At certain dosages, THC can be toxic for dogs,” says Dr. Stephanie McGrath, a neurologist at Colorado State University’s James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital. “But CBD comes from the hemp plant, which has THC levels of .3 percent or under. Our findings tell us that such a small amount is absolutely safe for dogs.”
But what about full spectrum vs isolate?
Now let’s touch on full-spectrum CBD oil. Along with a very small amount of THC, full-spectrum CBD contains other beneficial naturally occurring cannabinoids and terpenes found in the hemp plant. The majority of us human users prefer a full-spectrum CBD because, for lack of a better term, it just works better. When all these compounds team up, they work synergistically to offer the body more relief. This phenomenon has been called the ‘entourage effect’, and it applies to dogs, too!
A lot of the pet CBD oil suppliers out there are selling full-spectrum CBD, but pet owners who aren’t comfortable about the trace amounts of THC can always opt for isolate-based CBD oil, which has been stripped of everything but CBD, making it a zero THC product.
How much CBD should dogs have?
First the not-so-good news: There are no Health Canada-regulated dosages for dogs taking CBD.
And the good news: Absolutely no adverse effects of giving a dog “too much” CBD have been found. While discussing dosage, Dr. McGrath mentioned that her epilepsy study uses higher dosages than other ongoing studies and that she saw no negative side effects from implementing this high dosage.
Oral dosing is the quickest and best method for dogs, (hence why nearly every retailer sells theirs with a dropper). Most customers using CBD oil for their dogs just drop the oil right on their’ pup’s food. Check out our line of CBD oils for dogs for unflavoured, chicken and bacon.

Q: There are CBD oils and CBD treats for pets. Can I give my dog both?
A: Absolutely. The treats are great for on the go dosing – say for a pup who’s apprehensive on car rides, CBD treats would be an excellent thing to keep in the glove compartment. Because there are no negative side effects around giving CBD to dogs, you can feel free to treat your dog with one of our CBD treats in the afternoon, even if you gave them their dose of oil with breakfast.
Q: How do I know which strength to buy?
A: The CBD pet market usually creates different strengths for different sized dogs. A 250mg oil will be perfect for those small dogs in the 5-25 pound range, a 500mg for those medium-sized dogs out there, and the 1000mg strength is usually reserved for those big pups weighing in at 75 pounds and up.
Q: You say CBD has no negative side effects – can this be true?
A: The reports of negative side effects from using CBD are few and far between. In most of these rare cases, it is an upset stomach that is reported. This can be combatted by lowering the dose by half, and slowly working your way back up over the course of a couple of weeks. This allows your dogs’ system to get used to the product gradually.
